An Icelandic Adventure

During Half Term, Mrs Gill, Head of Geography and Lower School, led an action-packed Icelandic adventure with Miss Rogerson and Mrs Pople. She says of the trip;

“It was a privilege to lead the group of twenty-four girls who headed off on a Westonbirt Geography Department Icelandic adventure over half-term. The girls were an absolute credit to the school, and we know that many people enjoyed following our expedition vicariously via social media.”

“There were plentiful highlights to the trip, including: visiting the world's most northernmost capital, Reykjavik; awe and wonder at the Golden Circle of Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir; swimming in four different geothermal pools, including the blissful Blue Lagoon; an astonishing show of the Northern lights; and two earthquakes right underneath our feet!”

Known as the land of Ice and fire, the intrepid Westonbirt explorers made the most of everything Iceland has to offer. The girls enjoyed caving in lava tubes, visiting three glaciers, donning ice axes and crampons for mountaineering across Sólheimajökull and experiencing the ethereal blue icebergs of the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon; famously the backdrop for James Bond's 'Die another Day' and Lara Croft's Tomb Raider.

Mrs Gill concluded;

“The trip has educated the girls widely across the curriculum and inspired them to further explore this amazing country in the future, hopefully taking their wider family and friends. The landscape is breathtakingly photogenic and you can see why 'Game of Thrones' and 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' were filmed there. It is a truly amazing place!”

Further comments from pupils and staff on the trip included;

“Every day was better than the last, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, it did!” – Olivia Cook, Year 10

“It was amazing seeing the Northern Lights.” – Maddie Gill, Year 11

“The Iceland trip included several amazing ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences rolled into one. We saw glacial and blue lagoons, geysers, waterfalls, volcanos, the Northern Lights and felt an earthquake, all in the space of 5 days; mind blowing!” – Mrs Pople
